Initial response to site

The site for my final project is Brandan Yard, Bristol; just along from the floating harbour.  It looks out over the water to where SS Great Britain is moored.  On visiting the site it is impossible not to be drawn to the waters edge.  The harbour was integral to the growth and prosperity of Bristol and has guided a significant part of my site analysis and further research.

I discovered the work of Alice Fox, an artist who is preoccupied with where water meets land.  She works with fabric and paper to build subtle textural layers.  Found objects washed up along the shoreline are implemented to make marks, as well as sea water and tea to stain.  Hand stitching signifies the movement of waves as they wash up objects along the shore.

Intrigued by this process I fashioned my own fabric, weighted down with stones and rusty nails, then submerged it into the harbour water.  Over the coming weeks I will record how the water has affected it and document any changes.  This experiment may or may not go on to inform my design, depending on the results.  I am interested in the idea of using strips of  woven fabric to construct a lighting installation.
