Altro is a family run business specialising in safety flooring.  It was founded in 1919 and is a family run business.  Their head office is located in Letchworth, their design centre in London, resin flooring in Maiden Newton and Whiterock at Lowestoft.  They also have offices all over the world.  Altro has become extremely popular in Dubai.  Listed in the top 100 companies to work for.

Safety flooring is primarily used to prevent accidents in public spaces.  This in turn reduces insurance claims.  Over 10,000 accidents are reported each year, with 95% breaking bones as a consequence.  These are just the reported incidents, not including those that fall but get up and walk away.  The majority of accidents occur on smooth, wet floors.

Altro offer sustained slip resistance, throughout the life of the product.  Wear does not affect the slip resistance.  However, there is no such thing as non slip flooring, only ways to minimise risk.  Hygiene is also a very important factor to consider.  The Altro system blends from the floor up the wall, to eliminate gaps where germs can accumulate.

It is available in a wide range of colours and different effects.  Ranges include; Heavy duty, Value engineering, Inspirational solutions, Versatile solutions, Special applications, Wood smooth acoustic, Rubber flooring, Whiterock and Resin.

Sustainability is very important to the company and using sustainable products within the manufacturing process.  Everything is recycled and reused, often going into the backing of new flooring.  They have an impressive 0% lose.

Whiterock is an alternative to tiles, fully bonded and grout and impact free.  It can be used as splash backs in kitchens and bathrooms.  It is wipe clean and non absorbent, making it a hygienic choice for hospitals.  Cost is similar to tiling, per square metre installed.

Altro provide versatile products which can be used simultaneously within the same space, depending on the areas needs.  Used in healthcare, education, social housing, retail, laboratories, leisure and hospitality environments.

As an interior designer it is important to specify the correct flooring for the usage of the space.  You may be held liable for any accidents where inappropriate flooring has been fitted and an accident has occurred.
